Green Health Week is all about celebrating the great outdoors, connecting with nature and enjoying our natural environment. What better way to do that than walking! Charlotte Mackenzie, project manager of Think Nature Health Walks (TNHW), talks about the many benefits of walking in nature and how you can join a walking group and take part in one their walking events during Green Health Week.
Whether you’re walking in your local park or on a remote beach, by yourself or with a group, the benefits you can feel from walking are endless. The effects of fresh air, a change of scene and a sense of space can lift your mood and make you feel happier, improving both physical and mental health.
Scientific studies show that connecting with nature can ease stress, make you feel calmer and can reduce anxiety and depression. Walking in nature can also allow time for reflection and provide time away from daily struggles and distractions. Exercise, along with peace and quiet, can lift your spirits, boosting your energy levels, which in turn can help with better sleep patterns.
Discovering the beauty in nature can also encourage creativity and be a source of inspiration. Personally, I feel all of the benefits mentioned above when spending time walking outdoors and I’m constantly inspired by nature. Below are some photos which I have taken on outdoor adventures.

TNHW walking groups across the Highlands are celebrating Green Health Week and welcome you to join them to walk together. As part of their walk some groups are including visits to castle gardens, heritage centres, local woodlands and beaches, which will include gardening, history and mindfulness activities and talks, along with time for refreshments too.
