Abernethy Golf Club – Green Health Activity Day Sunday 4th July 2021

This Green Health funding allowed the Golf Club to put on their first ever activity day open to everyone – golfers and non-golfers.

The day started with a “Golf Memories Coffee Morning” based on the Golf Memories Scotland project but with the emphasis on golf in this community. Aimed specifically at isolated members of the community the chat helped stimulate numerous memories and self-confidence.

Next was the “Get into golf” an opportunity for all ages to have a gentle coached introduction to the basics of the game. Equipment purchased through the Green Health Project was available to borrow both on the day and will continue to be for members of the community.

A special appearance on the day was the Highland Disability Sport Golf Club ( also known as Highland Golf Club) who played a full round with members of the Abernethy Golf Club. Despite threatening thunder and lightening (not a good combination with golf) everyone completed memorable rounds. In their distinctive attire they added to the friendly and inclusive feel to the day.

After a hectic day the nature walk around the golf course provided us with a calming stroll to see in detail some of the natural wonders around the course. Our guide showed us the interconnections of meadows, trees, pondlife and bird boxes. It might not be the first thing people think of in terms of golf courses but the opportunity to get immersed in the nature of Strathspey is easy to do at Abernethy Golf Course.

The Golf Club plans to expand on the successful elements of activities by including them into their Club programme on a monthly basis next year.
