Hospital Greenspace- Apple Tree Planted at New Craigs Hospital

We are very grateful for a donation of a new apple tree from Torbreck Orchard to replace one that was damaged by deer. Helene Morse, New Craigs Hospital Manager helped plant the apple tree, alongside the Apex Highland team, as part of her pledge to support action to nurture the hospital grounds.

The New Craig’s orchard was planted in 2016 as part of the NHS Greenspace Demonstration Project which was delivered through the Green Exercise Partnership; a collaboration between NatureScot, Scottish Forestry, Public Health Scotland and NHS National Services Scotland. The site is maintained by Apex Highland who work with people with experience of the justice system and those at risk of committing offences.

This year, around 50kg of apples were harvested by staff & patients as part of Climate Week celebrations. Apples were distributed for use in patient activities and the hospital canteen- crumbles and apple cake enjoyed by all, and the remaining apples taken for personal use by staff.

The new tree will be protected from deer by a tree guard while it establishes and will provide fruit for years to come.

NHS Highland recently signed The Highland Charter for Climate, Nature and Health, emphasising the boards commitment to delivering on the NHS Scotland Environment and Sustainability Strategy. If you’re interested in developing an orchard at your NHS site please get in touch to discuss opportunities.
