We focus on enjoying the health benefits of being active, spending time outdoors, connecting with nature and being part of a community that have shared similar experiences.
We jog in nature-rich spaces in and around Inverness and often enjoy a cuppa together after. There is no cost to join and beginners are very welcome.

Outdoor learning and play
Abriachan Forest Trust
Abriachan’s community woodland is situated 10 miles from Inverness in the hills above Loch Ness. Established as a company limited by guarantee, charity, social enterprise over 21 years ago, one of the original aims was to encourage learning and recreation, with associated health benefits for all participants. Over the years we have worked in partnership with a wide variety of agencies and organisations. These originally included the local authority education and social work departments who referred pupils and their families to Forest School programmes, patients and their support staff from New Craigs hospital, APEX and HC criminal justice teams, then once we were Branching Out training we delivered programmes of Branching Out ( ~ 3 per year for over 4 years) to those referred by their community mental health teams and also trained others (NHS staff, HLH staff and freelance greenspace professionals) who worked in NHS H and Argyll. Over 60 have been trained in the whole NHS area. More recently we have also been trained in the Decider Skills and delivered Outsider Decider programmes to school pupils and, in partnership with NHS, training to 48 people who work in schools, third sector mental health organisations, CJS and members of the NHS teams across Highland. Working with families of young children we have become aware of some effective linking with the Branching Out groups, criminal justice participants and the extended families of individuals who have attended Abriachan and are now attending our Croileagan goes to town as either a parent and, in a couple of cases, as a grandparent …because they know being outside works for them!

Wee Adventure
Wee Adventure’s purpose is to get families taking part in healthy and educational activities in the great outdoors, on foot, bike, pram or wheelchair.
Stramash
We provide the nurturing environment which inspires children to become resilient, empathetic and achieving in harmony with the natural world, its seasons and native climate. We do this through our network of outdoor nurseries and learning services to primary schools as well as our contribution to developing the young workforce working outdoors.
The Shieling Project
The Shieling Project is an off-grid learning centre in the Highlands of Scotland. The project is all about outdoor living – from looking after our livestock to making real buildings and weaving baskets to making burgers from the meat we have raised here. You can help with seasonal tasks like planting, moving the cattle, making hay, or harvesting the crops. The tradition of the shieling where folk lived outdoors all summer herding the cattle, gives us a window into the past, but also helps us look forward to a sustainable future. Alongside our schools provision, we offer lots of courses and events throughout the year from craft weeks to family camps.
Volunteering opportunities
Culduthel Woods Group
The Culduthel Woods Group is a charity, first established in 2018, which aims to protect and improve the woods, to promote education and to encourage community involvement. On their website you can find out more about the woods and what we can all do to make them a better place for everyone to enjoy. They have a volunteer meet-up once a month, on Sundays (usually the 3rd one of the month, but check on Facebook site) from 2pm until 4pm.
If you use the woods, or care about what happens there, please join up as a member and support us in other ways.
Land & Deliver
Land & Deliver is an organisation raising awareness and access to green spaces for mental and physical wellbeing through practical volunteering opportunities. We work together to build and enhance green spaces while putting your volunteering needs first.
Current opportunities include a mid-week volunteering team, who tackle a wide range of tasks in Merkinch local nature reserve.

Befrienders Highland
Our walking and gardening groups no longer meet – we found it really hard to sustain the membership, so we now signpost folk who have those interests to existing groups that meet in their locality, and our volunteers will go along with their friend if necessary when they first start, just for some moral support until their confidence grows.
Trees for Life
Volunteer involvement in restoring nature, particularly in Glen Affric and Glenmoriston. Nature connection is a key part of our approach.
The Woodlands Trust
Management of woodlands for biodiveristy and people. Volunteering, events, tree planting, path work, interpretation on our owned sites.

Sustrans Volunteers
Sustrans volunteers look after the National Cycle Network. They help local people to walk and cycle. They improve our green spaces for wildlife. And they inspire young people in schools to get active.
Our volunteers are helping to create a better environment for us all. Even if you’ve got just an hour to give every so often. Or you can give us your time on a more regular basis. Whatever time you can spare, we’d really like to hear from you.

More Trees Now
More Trees Now is a social green project for everyone. If you have or know of an area with saplings we could harvest, or a location where you would like to plant, then get in touch! We can help organise volunteers and an event to rescue trees and give them away for free! Our 3 central goals are to stop climate change, increase biodiversity and provide ways to take action for people with climate concerns.
